On May 8, 2026, the eyes of millions of viewers worldwide will be on both the Old and New Town of Nessebar. Stage 1 of the 109th edition of the iconic “Corsa Rosa” will start right here. The town will come alive with energy, elite athletes, and the signature pink color symbolizing the leader’s jersey – the Maglia Rosa.
The route of Giro d’Italia through Bulgaria
The event will cross the country from east to west, showcasing some of Bulgaria’s most beautiful landscapes:
- Stage 1 (May 8): Nessebar – Burgas (156 km). An exceptionally fast and flat stage along the Black Sea coast, designed for sprinters. The peloton will set off from Nessebar, pass through the town, loop around Burgas Lake, and finish with a final sprint in Burgas.
- Stage 2 (May 9): Burgas – Veliko Tarnovo (220 km). A long stage that will test the riders’ endurance with a climb to the “St. St. Peter and Paul” Monastery above Lyaskovets, before a spectacular finish in the old capital, Veliko Tarnovo.
- Stage 3 (May 10): Plovdiv – Sofia (174 km). Connecting the two largest cities in Bulgaria, the route passes through the Borovets Pass before the final stretch in the heart of Sofia.
